College English 101 Freedom Writers

After viewing the movie "Freedom Writers", answer the following questions:
Why are the students filled with such anger at the beginning of the movie? Do you think their anger is reasonable?

How do the classmates learn to trust one another? How does reading and
writing initiate this change?

  2. At the beginning of the movie the students are filled with so much anger simply because they are misunderstood and they feel that no one cares for them so they revolt in order to get attention. I do believe their anger is reasonable, because they were going through a lot at home, in the streets and at school. Being raised into the world of hate for other races, it’s not their fault that they are just doing what they know, hating eachother.
The “Line Game” was the reason for the students starting to trust each other, when they realized they all have the same problems even though their color is different. Reading “The Diary of Anne Frank’s” was the major book that got the students closer, letting them realize that they are not the only ones living in hard conditions and that they should be strong through whatever they endure.

  3. In this movie Freedom Writers if you noticed the class was made up much different cultural diversity. I think that the behavior from this class or to say environment of these young adults are not coming from within them but , I think it also is coming from the homes of these particular individuals or from their colleges.
The class had learn many thing in different ways in which they thought them .One of the ways I noticed that had been the most effective was the game that the teacher played with the tape that formed a long line jus to let them see what kind of back ground ,and life style their own classmate is coming from. The writing and reading of the journals was for the teacher to learn more about her students and to know what is really affecting them in life so she can make a difference and respond to their problems which would also help her students to follow in positive foot steps and helping them to reach promotional requirements.

  4. I believe that in the beginning of the movie Freedom Writers there is so much tension among the students in the class room because of them many different cultures in the class due to the Riots, fights and gang activities that were taking place and also because they themselves the students were involved in them.
Hence the reason for their anger because they all knew what it was like to be beaten and to lose someone they loved making their anger reasonable. Each of their cutlers disliked each other for all of them a love one had been lost and mainly they have been hurt.
The students then learn to trust each other later on in the film and this begun to happen because of their teacher. She never gave up and she worked with them despite of all her obstacles. They begun to get along with each other and trust each other when they begun to understand each other and know that they all weren’t that different when it came to their history and emotions. The writing helped them to let out their frustration and reading it to make them realize and see what it was that their feeling. Writing was a way to escape all the hurt within them.

I also agree with Ian and Alex..

  5. The students were filled with anger because they thought that no one understood what they were going though and by that all of them had that mentally that they thought no one cares for them so they had that deep anger within them. I do believe that their anger is reasonable because it’s like they couldn’t find a way out because of the homes and environment they came from. They were raise up in that situation so they react in the only way they knew.
The students learn to trust one another by the simple ‘Line Game’ the teacher played with them. The game showed them that all of them basically had the same problem. The Diaries of Anne Frank’s made them realize that other people had similar experience and by that they were inspired to keep holding on. The writing was to make them express themselves and to help them let go of anxiety.

  6. In the beginning of the movie the students were filled with anger because on a daily basis they had to fight for survival, reputaion, justice and escape. The students believed that respect was not given unless you die fighting for it. I do believe that their anger is reasonable because they were not thought the true basics of lives. Most lost a family member or friend to gang violence or some to the color of his/her skin.
The classmates learned to trust each other by participating in the different activities their teacher Ms.Gruwell introduced. The ‘Line Game’ for example made them understood that due to gang violence friendships were broken, trust amongst each other were lost and the realization that even though skin color was different they all shared similar problems and stories. The reading of “The Dairy of Anne Frank’ also made them realize that people in harder times were able to survive and escape to a new beginning. In writing their stories it made them realize they all had something significant to share.

  7. In my perspective the young adults were all angered and frustrated because they lived a life filled with terror and had to fight for survival. They just felt as if they can’t trust anyone but there kind since they all have had a difficult life experience. Their anger is reasonable because living a life of torment and unhappiness, killing is the only option to live, being hated all are reasons to make ones life miserable. The classmates learned to trust each other by seeing how all of them shared so many things in common and by being united as one they realized that they can accomplish much. They all received a note book to write in there life experiences and all that they have gone through. This relieved those of the pain and by reading The Diary of Anne Frank showed them that the toughest of challenges can be overcome. They all became inspired and learned the meaning of life.

  8. Well at the biggning of the movie Freedom Writers, the students were filled with so much anger simply because no one care for them. In order to get the attention of the teachers, they cause a lot of problem. Problem like fighting in class, distroying school property, failin. All this were done by the students in order to gain attention. Almost all the student in the class came from a violent home, or a home full of thugs and thieves. So i personally think that their anger is very reasonable, simply because nobody ever care for them.

In the class room, there were four diferent ethnic groups. There were the hispanics, orientals, African Americans, and lastly a caucasion students. These four groups tinks they were diferent from each other. All that changed when Miss Gruwell made them played the "line game". This game made each and every student see that they are not so diferent. All of them go trough the same pain daily. After this game was finish, trust between the students begins to grow.

Reading “The Diary of Anne Frank’s” made each and every student realize that they were not the only one who faced hard times. They shouldent give up in life but instead fight trough the hard times and make a brighter future for themselves. Reading this book really brought the students much closer.

Lastly, by Miss Gruwell giving each student a journal, that made them expressed themselves in such ways no one belive it was possible. It made them feel free of saying whats on their mind without someone bringing them down. also this made each student draw away from their gangs and stay focus.

  10. in my view Freedom writers is a very good movie because it tells the tale of what many youths are facing. at the beginning of the movie it shows how the students in ms Guwell were very frustrated and angry because they had to fight for ways to survive.

  12. The students are filled with anger at the beginning of the movie because most of their lives have been filled with death and rejection. They have lost many loved ones and at the same time being rejected by society. (Teachers, parents, etc.) Yes I think their anger is reasonable because society is not really taking the time to understand these students’ issues and are simply passing it on.

They learn to trust each other through the various activities Ms. Gruwell made them part-take in, which helps them to understand each others struggles and realize that they are not all that different from each other. Reading and writing initiates this change because through reading they came to know that other people have been in their position and have had to face greater hardships; and through writing they get a chance to share their story and leave their mark in the world.

  14. The students are filled with anger because of the problems they went through. They have seen things that they never expect will happen, so they are taking their frustration on everyone except of their own kind. In some instances their anger are reasonable because some of the situations happen and there is no reason behind the incident.

The classmates learn to trust each other by Ms. Gruwell let them play a “Line-Game”. By playing this game, the students realize that they end-up in front or beside their enemy. This happened because the students hold grudges against each other, therefore they should trust each other. They should live life to the fullest and learn to forgive each other.

  15. The students were mad because they grew up in a society of hatred against each other, killing of one another over race and gangs, and they were greatly misunderstood by the other teachers at the school who didn't believe in them. Their anger was reasonable because they got the attention they needed to show their potential and not have other people see them just as gang and street kids with no future. The classmates learned to trust one another when Ms. Gruwell got them to share their experiences through the line game and also when they wrote their experiences in their journal. When they read, they found out that others had same experiences as them and by writing they were able to express themselves so that they were able to share it with others and be understood.

  16. The movie freedom writers is very interesting, in the beginning of the movie the students are filled with anger because of what was happening in the society. we have to consider racism was at an all time high, and this most definately had to have some effect on these students.Growing up in a rough neighbor hood tend to shape an individuals' persfective of life. many if not all of the student were gang affliated, they have seen and been through a though life hence the reason they lash out on others and are so angry.
I would not say it was reasonable, however it is understandble because it was thier way of getting respect in the "streets". Trust is a major factor in everyone's life, getting the students to trust each other was a smart thing that mrs Gruwell did. she gain thier trust and allowed them to open up a little more, that way, she and other class mates got to know more about each other. She did this by having students write a diary,.Reading and writing allows them to express thier emotions to each other, it allows them to see similarities and differences in each other. this united the class and it gave them a reason for living and to fight for success and not against each other.

  18. In the beginning of the movie, students were mad at each other for many reasons, the main one being racial differences. Along with that came segregation of the people which then formulated into gangs and groups that rebel against each other. The hatred that fueled the rebellion against each other came from reasons such as the “white’s” arresting the “latinos” and taking them away from their homes and families. This hatred was widespread and most of the times had nothing to do personally with the young gang members, the society pushed and forced them into developing this type of destructive behavior amongst themselves. Therefore, it was reasonable for them to be angry at each other, basically, they had no choice not to; this was their way of life, the way they grew up.
With this tension between all parties, trust level is bound to be little to none. Gaining trust in each other would definitely be a challenge, but teacher Erin Gruwell, who is played by actress Hillary Swank, devised a plan to basically trick the students into gaining trust in each other. Knowing the class was filled with students who didn’t like reading, she bribed them with a game, to them, a simple game that would get them from doing typical school work. The game was called “the line game”. With this game she managed to bring all the races and cultures together and allowed them to realize that they are all one and even though being near each other brought out hate, it also brought out that they were all feeling the same pain as a result of crime and violence.
After they realized this, the teacher decided to take it a step further, to let them write journals. By writing these journals, the students saw what was happening in their lives instead of just living life and overlooking the stuff that occurred everyday. Likewise, by reading the students gathered knowledge about the world around them and noticed what happens due to these gang violence and also the end results of them. Similarly, the learnt how people have overcame these obstructions before and use these elements and inputted them into their lives.

They do take their anger on their own kind. For example in d beginning when the two colored guys kept going at each other, and they are both "black". And at the end of the movie the Eva gets anger taken out on her from her own kind. There are always reasons for whatever happened but they were too naive to see what the reason were because they want people to feel sorry for them. In the life they are living they expect the worst, they don't expect anything good to happen, so I don't really think that is why they are angry and frustrated. They just don't know how to deal with the reality of what is occurring around them.

  23. At the beginning of the movie Freedom Writers, the students are filled with anger because they live in a place that is full of crime and violence. They feel that no one cares for them that is why they believe in the sense of anger and hatred. All their lives they have been experiencing negative things that impact their lives in the way they think and act. I believe that their anger is reasonable because that is the only way they can find some relief within them.
The students learn to trust each other by playing a simple line game, which made them realize that they have the same problems and conflicts. The reading and writing of the journals made the students trust each other. It also made them realize that all of them are having a rough time but they should always try to overcome it and become better persons in life.

  24. I agree with Alexandria that they do take their anger out on their own race. For instance when Eva decided to tell the truth in court, it was her own kind that came after her and only spared her due to her father’s status. I also think that they are confused because they fight for their kind and give the idea that the world would be a better place without the other races but they still depend on them in a sense. For example the Blacks and Latinos still use the Asian stores. If they had so much hatred they would not support them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Based on my view, the students were angry because they felt that there wasn’t a way out and no one was there to support them. They fear that if they tried changing things, they might even lost their life or a love one, or they would make the situation worse. So they just went on whit their everyday lives, and frustrating themselves more whit difficulties. Their anger is reasonable due to the fact that, they lived whit fear and no one was there for them. Who wouldn’t be?
After playing that game in class and reading “The Diary of Ann Franks”, they notice that there were people and actually someone who cared, and was willing to listen. They also noted that they had all faced similar obstacles, and there were others who faced even bigger problems than their own. Them noting these things, allowed them to start gaining trust and realizing that they are not the only ones who face problems.

  26. In the beginning of the movie the students were filled with anger because life wasn´t that sweet to them. As a child they had gone through terrifying experiences such as: losing a love one, suffering from domestic and so forth. They were raised among violence and felt that they weren´t loved liked derserved.
I personally think that their anger was reasonable because life had treated them very hard. They had to go through alot of stress at home, school and streets. For them living a gangster life wasn´t easy; they kept running from others, loosed their friends because of the gang violence or had to confront other gangsters in the streets. To me that wasn´t easy they never knew if they would live to see the light of another day.
The students lerned to trust each other by playing games, spending time together in the class room and sharing their poblems. They finally realized that they were of different races but had many things in common especially when it came to violence and poblems, either at home, school or the streets.
Reading and writing initiated the change in all the students’ lives by: (1) they started to write daily journals about their troubled lives and had the opportunity to express their feelings to the paper and to take out all the anger they had inside, nevertheless, they also practiced their grammar and improved their writing skills; (2) by reading dairies of other people such as the Diary of Anne Franks , taught them that they weren’t the only people in the world going through so much difficult experiences. They learn that they can excel in life and fulfill all their dreams regardless of how difficult life seems. The students also improved their writing and readings skills by just reading a book.

  28. I personally love this movie; I think there is so much we can learn from it, especially in a country like Belize with so much diversity in races and cultures.
The anger the students show in the movie, I believe it to be the product of a resentment they hold against each other for all the pain they have suffered in the hands of gangs and racist violence. They have been raised believing that nobody cares about them and they are so disappointed that not even in school they get to be treated differently. The “line game” made them realize that no matter their race, all of them have suffered, all of them have been discriminated but also that they have similar taste in music, movies and other interests. For the first time their eyes are opened to see deeper than just the skin color.
The books the teacher chooses for them to read tell the experiences of people they could relate with and they discovered they are not the only ones suffering; they start to change and learn to respect each other.
How writing help to change them? Well, by writing they could say anything that was in their mind without having to worry of others’ opinion, it was a way to release some of the resentment and they had the feeling that finally they were being heard.

  29. The students are filled with anger in the beginning of the movie simply, because of thier life style and the manner in which they have to live it. In the movie one can see that niether of them have a household of a typical nuclear family. They live each day trying to prove to their cliques that they are the person who they frienda want them to be. As members of their cliques they have to remain true to whoevver is in taht group whether, they like it or not. To me their anger is reasonable; if my life was that way and I had to face what they faced I would be mad the world for all I care. So, yes to me it is reasonable. only those teenagers knows what they are going through and,who feels it knows it. Learning to trust each other was not somehing that came o them easily to me it happened all because of the teacher and her morals and guidance, as well as the fact of realizing that they share similar lifestyle within their class circle. by them reading and writing it helped them to see that by expressing one's self and bottling his emotions most problems can be removed if they just tell a person.

  30. I agree with Sara. Belize is a country with many cultures and people with different ethnic background and. The teenagers in the movie are the type of kids who is a product of theri resenment. they did realize that mny of them did or ave shared similar experience with each other.

  32. In the movie "Freedom Writers" the students are filled with anger due to the fact that they experienced horrible events that make them racists against each other. They didn't trust anyone except for their KIND. Their anger is reasonable because of such tragedy they faced when they were younger and even now they face this cultural barrier among themselves. This movie slowly shows us that the teacher slowly earns their respect by showing them things even more tragic than themselves such as the Jews in the holocaust. They get to go on trips, meet some holocaust people and that's when they realize that they should have a better lifestyle than now and no one is better than anyone else. No matter which culture you're from. Also by reading and writing, they are able to express themselves and having their own say and voice rather than to live the life their KIND wants them to live. Nevertheless they break down the cultural barrier through sharing feelings with one another and comes to understand the pains each and everyone of them bares.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Clearly, there are many racial tensions and segregation amongst the students. They are all angry because they live a life of gang retaliations and racial diversity. In the movie one particular race cannot cross paths with a person of another race. This clearly shows the segregation aspects between the students in the classroom.
In my opinion, there anger is reasonable because on a daily basis they must come face to face with threats, death, loss and eviction. This emotionally breaks down there feelings.
As changes in the classroom are made the classmates learn to trust one another as they learn that they are more alike than they thought they would be. They learn that they all go through the same things through their writings in their own personal diaries. Even more, so when each are asked to volunteer to read their entries.
Reading and writing initiates this change among the students as they learn that they all go through the same common risks they must undergo on a daily basis. As well, through the reading of Anne Frank some are able to see that life goes on and that there is much more to life of gang violence and racial segregation. At the end they all are able to graduate and move on to college.

  35. To Ian Michael:

Firstly, I most say that you posted a good comment. If I were to grade the comment out of 10 I would give you a 9. You brought up very good points that made me want to read the comment. The most significant point I saw was, whereby, you said that the behavior of the students weren’t coming from within them but from home. I agree with that statement because I believe that the students adapted such a behavior from the environment that surrounded them. A second good point is where you stated that the game they played with the tape “line game” was an effective method of making them realize that they all shared a common background/lifestyle despite their color. And I conclude by saying “Ian, good job; I enjoyed reading your comment!”

  37. In the movie the "Freedom Writers" I believe the students are filled with such anger at the beginning of the movie, because of the way they grew up. They were taught to defend one of their own even if they knew they were not innocent. It was based on the gangs they were involved with depending on their culture. The latinos hating the whites because they think they rule the world, the blacks believing they are in a war and if they die for their own dies respected. They all believe they were not given the respect they deserved.
I think their anger is reasonable because if they were given the support and attention by the administration probably that would have made them realize they were cared for.
They learned to trust each other when Mrs Gruwell made them played the line game which made them realized that they all went through a lot and had bad experiences.
By reading "The Diary of Anne Frank's" this made them realize that they were not the only one's whose been through a lot but they needed to try very hard to be strong in whatever situation they might have faced.

  39. This is getting confusing. I'm trying my best to keep up but i check this blogsite once a day, and by that time, over twenty comments have already been posted. I don't know what to respond too or what to say, but, this movie is a great movie, it brings out obstacles that people go through everyday. It is apparent in this movie, that the society plays major roles in the behavior of an individual. In this particular instance, in the movie that is, everyone grew up in a troublesome environment with only negative and destructive thoughts running in their minds. They believed this was where they had to be and they would never get any higher. As the movie progresses, it demonstrates how one person can make a big difference by giving these people the attention they deserved. This can be true also for many people in the world today.

  40. I strongly agree with tommy comparing the students life style to the jews of the holocaust. Showing them how being an "Original Gangster" is really like, and reaching to the point when they all realized that everyone is of equal. They all shared the same experience letting them know that they need each other to make a better living and lifestyle with peace and love.

I agree with Shameka, the student's anger may not be reasoble because if you hurt someone of the other gans they will always get back at you and hurt you also, so it is a circle of he hatred; but it is very understandable when you see that some of them are pointed at for things they did not do, just because of their race.

  48. At the beginning of the movie the students are filled with so much anger because of all the negative attitudes everyone has around them. They are being judged; divided and outcast. Gang violence and racial tension plays a big part in their attitude. In my opinion their anger is most definitely reasonable because it’s not their fault they are so angry at one another that’s all they know. That’s how they’ve been raised and all their doing is protecting themselves. They learn to trust one another because of the line game their teacher had them played with one another. It allowed them to understand each other and then realize that they all share common problems in life.
The reading of the book “The Diary of Anne Frank” and inviting Miep Gies the woman who sheltered Anne Frank from the German soldiers made them realize that is was indeed better to do the right thing in life. Also writing in the diaries about their experiences in life allowed them to express themselves more and to let go most of the anger they had in them. All they wanted was to feel loved and appreciated and that’s exactly what the got from their teacher.

  50. The student were filled with anger at the beginning of the movies because they were racists against one another which due to lack of knowledge and the awareness against racism. No it is not reasonable, they got to know after they gain knowledge.
The classmate learn to trust one another after Mrs Gruwell made them to mingle with each other and began to know that none is as harmful as they thought and their ways of reasoning and thinking change completely and began to love and trust each other.
Reading and writing initiate the change because it expose them to more understading, knowledge and love and as well made them know that they are important and have better future.

  51. The students were filled with so much anger at the beginning of the movie because they felt that they were being underestimated by everyone around them. Also, they thought that they were classified as useless or worthless because of their color and race. Most of Mrs. Gruwell’s students had been through several pains and horrifying experiences due to gangs and violence; therefore, their anger when being underestimated is justifiable and reasonable because they were just being victims of social prejudices that was definitely not being constructive to them.
The classmates began to trust each other after being exposed, by Mrs. Gruwell’s in-class activities, to their classmates’ life experiences. It is then that they understood no-one was really different from one another. Instead they started to interact more with each other and with their subject; they became better readers and their writing improved in an admirable way. This method of class participation was crucial in initiating a change in them since their minds were open while they read about people they didn’t know, yet they were able to identify with them. Writing also developed their minds and their way of thinking was able to develop widely.

  52. I believe that the students at the beginning of the movie were angry because they felt shunned by society. They weren’t accepted by others but only of there kind so they felt as if the world will become a better place only if there kind was to populate the world. There anger is reasonable living a life of hatred and fighting to survive is nothing to be happy about. Having all the greatest things in life taken away just breaks the heart of love and fills it with hate. The classmates learn to trust one another when they all noticed that they all have had similar life experiences and understand the situations they all face daily. By reading and writing they all expressed themselves and giving them the mind to view life at a different perspective. Reading the Diary of Anne Frank gave them courage and motivations to see that all can be overcome no matter what the situation.

  54. I agree with sheronda. The students were raise in a manner to defend their kind. They all had different moralities in earning respect, and blaming the white people for the destruction of the latino race. It was very good i support it all the way.

  55. The students were filled with such anger at the beginning of the movie because they felt vulnerable and also felt that no one really cared about them. They fought amongst each other to protect their racial identity. I believe their anger is reasonably justified because they didn’t have anyone to really guide them through life. Basically they did what they thought was best to protect themselves hoping to see another day because of their affiliations with the gangs and violence on the streets.
The classmates learnt to trust each other by the activity they played in class. Through the activity done they all realized that they loss multiple love ones. This made them grasp that they all had similar issues which they had to encounter regardless of their race and there was no racial barrier to their social and personal challenges. Reading and writing initiated this change by letting the classmates express their inner emotions and feelings of what goes on in their lives. It also allowed them a medium to relieve themselves of all the stress and pain they encounter in their everyday lives.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The students were filled with so much anger in the beginning of the movie because of how they were brought up and the surroundings they lived in. All they saw in life was violence and struggle, although they were split up in racial groups they all had there reasons for not trusting the other ethnicity, but all had one common enemy white people. Each ethnicity been through so much in there life and the only ethnicity that they saw had life easy was Caucasians. So they grew up bitter against white people and also started to be bitter against other ethnic groups.
There anger was very reasonable to me sometimes we are nurture into being the people we are today. And they were nurture into not trusting other ethnic groups we can’t blame them for there moral believes.
Eventually the classmates started to trust each other when they began to see that all of them were going through the same struggle in life. All of them were in gangs, had family members kill, lived in the projects etc., and by writing about there problems the classmates eventually began to hear the struggle other classmates were going through. They all began to view each other as one instead of thinking one ethnicity was better than the other hence Erin’s teaching method also helped the situation.

  58. Sydale basically said the same thing I said and Sydale's point of views is very good. They really had no one to show them the right way of life so what they saw and taught was pure anger and hate against the other ethnic groups until they all learnt that they are going through the same things in life.

  62. At the beggining of the movie, students are angry and frustrated beacuse of thier living situations. Most come from poor families facing gangs, crime and racism in their communities. This daily struggle to finsh a day and see another is the main reason for thier anger. They don't know better than what they live everyday so I feel thier anger is for the most part reasonable. In Eglish, literature and writing brings oportunities to them. Students learn they are all in the same situations and want the same in life. They now trust each other as they move forward in thier battles as one.

  63. I definately agree with melonie. The game they played in the classrom along with the presence of Anne Frank made them know that we are basically same people with ivividual struggles and anything can come true within our reach.

  64. After reviewing the movie ‘freedom writers’ I believe it was very interesting. My reason by observation as to why the students were filled with anger was because; they were faced with many trials and tribulation such as racial, territorial disputes, broken homes and etc.
I believe that their anger indeed was reasonable. I say so because most of them felt captive and did not have that sufficient support from families, school mates lecturers, society and accessibility to gain knowledge about controlling the issues that affected their lives.
They gain each other’s trust when the teacher Ms.Gruwell did a holocaust and they realized that they had much more in common than they thought. also thereafter they gradually learnt a lot more about expressing themselves and copping with the issues.
The reading made them relate to the issues that the writer had experienced and how they overcame It. Moreover they applied it to their lives and saw that the writers are heroes and that they themselves are heroes.

  66. At the begining of the movie the students are angry because they cannot trust anyone and are all from different racial groups so they trust no one but thier selves. Therefore they must fight each other to gain respect from others. This anger is reasonable because the way they were brought up they learnt to trust no one but themselves. They learn to trust each other after writing in their books which they were given an soon realize that they share the same experiences and struggles so they begin to trust each other. The Diary of Anne Frank showed them that the toughest of challenges can be overcome which made them felt inspired to overcome all obsticules.

  68. Freedom writers is not only a movie about racism, anger, and misunderstanding, but a movie of taking chances, changes, and moreover a movie of influence and inspiration. Indeed, the movie start with violence and the kids grew up as a product of their environment, just like some of us in Belize. These kids grew up thinking that there environment was the only surroundings they had and that no another world exist. Mrs Gruwell this first time teacher, did not know what she was getting into, but she had one thing in mind was to make a change.
She did something that no others could have done; which was to get into their minds and inspiring them to make a change. How did she do this? She did by giving each one of them a journal and letting them write whatever they feel, each of them had a story to tell, it is just like us we each have our own dream, and aspiration. Reading the diary of Anne Frank help most of them to realise that the fight they have with themselves is nothing comparing to one who fight for freedom

  70. i believe that the students are filled with anger because of the violent experiences that they have gone through from earily in life the teen are tought to stay in their own race and live in a segregated way and their anger toward each other is not reasonable because the reason they dislike each other is because they are tought to do so and they have no real reason to dislike each other

the classmates learn to trust one another when eva brok the tren and and told the trueth in court and went agants her own friends and family reading and writing intiute the change because the more they got to do so the more they got to found out abut more preson that was faceing the same challenges in life and they got to see a way out of the life they were liveing

  71. Moneesha Prince The students were filled with such anger because of the life styles they were forced to endure in. Majority of the students lived in poverty, broken homes, were members of gangs etc. In my point of view the students do have the right to have the kind of anger they have within them. No one should be forced to live in the life style they lived in.
The students learned to trust one another through attending there English classes and learning about the many struggles each of them went through. This made the students compare and contrast the many struggles each of them went through. This made the students realize that although they were from various back grounds and culture they had similar struggles in life. This also made them realized that they needed to be there for each other because they knew how important it was to have someone there for them.
Reading and writing initiate this change because it made the students find out that people lived in worst life style and had major struggles.

  72. In the begining of the movie the students were filled with so much anger because they were from a negative enviroment and that was the way they were tought to behave, to show no respect. I think their anger is reasonalbe because of the enviroment they are from and this behavior also cause a dislike for school.

I think the class males learn to trust one another because of way their teacher handle the situation. She showed then love, care and understand and through that the student showed each other the samething. Then Eva told the truth in court about a murder she had witness going against her own friends to do the right thing. The reading and writing indicate this change because of how close everyone was getting and just willing to open up about their own experiences.

  74. the book/movie freedom writers is a very good movie, because it shows how students/people where growing up in the community. it started when a teacher Ms.Erin Gruwell(Hilary Swank) went to the school to do an interview to teach English to the students.they ask her if she was ready to face the students because at the time the students didn't have any manners. she was still excited to be a teacher. at the first moment the students didn't like her at all because they thought that she was all about herself, but she proved to them that teaching was her passion and that she like to work with young people. as they days went by the class seems to get closer with each other even with Ms.Gruwell. she went to the head of the department to ask for books for her students. the head of department told her to purchase it out of her own money. she then went to look for other jobs besides her teaching just to buy books for them. so at the end of the day Ms.Gruwell was working three jobs. she went and purchased books for each one of the. when she went to class the other day she gave them out to her students telling them to write whenever they feel to and it doesn't matter about what. they all write and she sit and read every single one of them. one student even write about she had to watch her mother got beaten to death.

  76. Poverty and danger is one of the most major situations that cause the teenagers to live in fair. These teenagers are living in racial environment so there is a lot of anger. This is very reasonable action that was taken by the students. I agree with the other students also with Alexandra. The students do feel like they are alone and one cars for them.
When someone writes their feelings it gives them a sense of relief. This then helps them to get some of that hatred that they have been struggling and conserving within them released. In this movie trust and respect is very powerful, which was very hard to get. These students eventually started to trust each other because Mrs. Gruewell provides a safe environment for these students in the class room.
Reading initiates this change because it allows the student to realize the many struggles there are in life. The Writing part on the other hand allows them to be able to express their feelings and emotions. This is something they did not know how to do in the beginning.

  77. Basically the main reason as to why the students are filled with so much anger at the beginning of the movie is because of many reasons: school, problems at home and even troubles on the streets. All these challenges put together can affect the development process in an adolescence life. Because they lack love they take their frustration out on their fellow classmates. I partly agree that their anger is reasonable because they are searching for love and they seem to find it in the wrong places ( Gangs), but then again I believe that the world we live in is not perfect and in life we face many challenges in which we shall overcome in a positive way.
The first step that the classmates took into starting to trust each other is when they played a line game in class and from that game they realized that most of them faced similar problems in life so that paved the way for them a little. The second phase was when they read the diary of Anne Frank; that taught them that no matter how great the challenge may be it can be easily overcome so they made a conscious effort to change their life style.
Reading and writing initiate this change because their ignorance level was decreasing and they may have realized that life was too short to be fighting for no reason they believed that it was time for a change and if it was to happen it should be now.

  78. I agree with Steven's comment because it's true when one is faced with racism i can emotionally ruin an adolescence especially with the other conditions they are facing in life.

  79. 1. In the movie, the students are filled with so much anger because of the way they were brought up to believe that they must remain loyal to their own individual race, group and culture. And I do believe that their anger is reasonable due to the fact that this was already part of their lifestyle. They were taught, as I said earlier, to hang out with their own kind and culture.
    2. The students learnt to trust each other after they had the Line Game. They began to realize that they are no different from each other. All or most of them have something similar to every one of them such as a friend (s) who died from gang violence. The Diaries of Anne Frank’s also allow them to realize their similarities. The reading and writing allow them to express themselves and realize whatever inner thought they wanted to say written.

  80. The transition from one level to another had a big role to play. They all came from various backgrounds and they grew up either being abused or display some sort of violence. Some were members of gangs or related in some way to gang violence. In my view their behavior was reasonable because they lack upbringing, role models and ignorance. Which was the reason why they need a good education.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I agree with Guy the students were raised in that fashion, that had to look out for there own and only associated with there own kind, thus the reason for them having so much hate for each other. Good point Guy. :)

  82. Well basically freedom writers, is a movie that mainly shows how gang and violence affects the life and the environment of many young people, terms of education especially. The movie began showing people being killed and hurt. Then in the it shows the school, where many students who attend there have problem with the gang and violence. But one day,a teacher came into the school and teaches them. with her effort and continue support, one of the first thing that she did was to try and get some information from them based on their life, she finally gets a little closer to the students and they also feels a little relief by telling her some of their problems and issues.as a token from the teacher, she gave them a journal book in which they can write down all the activities that happens in their everyday lives.with the help that they will get, will defiantly help them to change their life style and habits and try to become better person in socity..

  85. The students were filled with such anger at the beginning of the movie because they thought that their lives would have been better if the other ethnic groups weren't where they were. They thought that the whites were doing whatever they wanted to do to others. They also believed that they were suffering on their own and that no one understood them or even trying to. They believed that no one loved or cared for them, that they were suffering alone with no help.
I think that their anger was reasonable to a point because they wanted others to see them, to know that they existed, to know that they need to be loved and appreciated. They wanted to be and feel accepted by all. And no, because they were looking for love in all the wrong places and were hurting others. Also because fighting and killing would get them no where. They would accomplished nothing that way and no one would want to be around them.
The class learned to trust one other when they played the line game and they found out that even though they were different in color, appearances and races, they were not so different at all. They found out that they all had a lot in common. They were all suffering from the same thing, gang, lost of love ones, being shot at and of course lack of love and attention.
Reading and writing initiate this change because they were free to express in writing what they were thinking, feeling and what they were going through and knew that someone cared enough to read what they had wrote. Through the reading they learned that they were not the only one going through hard times and struggle. People went through worse that what they were going through and over came. They also found out that doing what is right pays.

  86. I agree with what Sofia said, that the students realized that others were faced with similar obstacles and bigger problems than their own. Realizing this they began to trust each other and learned that they are not the only ones with problems.

  87. At the beginning of the movie the students are filled with rage and anger against each other. The reason to this is that the students are filled with enemity against all those who are different from their own cast and creed. This is due to the continuous conflicts between them which are present just to prove their own superiority. They are angry because they feel they face injustice and are treated unequally. Since childhood even in their minds they have been taught to differentiate among people. They grew up with guns and wars. And they believed what people told them. Told them what sect did it. They were taught to do what was right for the whole community but in that lesson, they were not taught to stand up for the truth, even if that is against their own group. The anger was reasonable yet immature.
The classmates trust in each other grew as with time they realized that each of them in some way or the other faced similar things in their life. They learnt they were not the only one who were given unfair treatment. Through reading and writing they realize the situations they were in. they were able to see the cause and the result of their activities, on themselves and on the society.

  88. i believe that at that begginig of the movie they were filled with so much hate because of there surrounding and how they were raised up to be like.. and also because they were seperated by race. there anger to me is partially reasonable beacuse in the society were they are growing up is tuff no room for the weak, but on the other side of this its like years of backed up frustration. the classmates learnt to trust one another because of the amazing teaching skills of the teacher, without her passion most of them would die. i believe reading and writing initaite change because it let the person express the true fellings.

  90. At the beginning of the movie the students were filled with anger and tension, due to the fact that most had problems at home, some had differences because they were affiliated with different gangs, and some were discriminated against. I believe their anger is reasonable because living such a lifestyle can bring down one’s self-esteem, making them unable to trust each other and as a result they hold this kind of anger inside of them,
The classmates learnt to trust each other through the various activities the teacher held in class, such as, journal writing and reading book that in which they could relate to. This enabled them to be more open and express emotions and personal feelings amongst each other. The students realized even though they were from different backgrounds, they shared similar problems and feelings, which formed trust and understanding amongst classmates.

  94. In my view, they each came from different racial and ethnic background that justified hatred and brutality towards others of a different race and creed. In addition, these teenagers came from poor single parent homes, living in a low income neighborhood where gang violence was at its highest. They had to grow twice as fast mentally and adapt to the hostile environment they were placed in. Instead of depending on the father to work, pay for the bills, protect and feed them. They had to fend for themselves. They had to learn how to hustle and make a “fast” buck to survive. They had to adapt to their environment by joining gangs to try and stay alive.

Yes, I believe their anger is reasonable because they didn’t have a choice in how and where they were raised. All these underlying factors added to their resentment and anger.

The classmates learn to trust one another when the teacher places a piece of tape in the middle of the class and begins to ask them questions about their lives. They begin to see that at some point they all go through some of the same problems as others in the class. Through sharing and writing in their journal they are able to express their feelings and to see that they are not the only ones having problems in this world. Reading the Diary of Anne Frank further confirm this to them.

By Ms. Gruwell giving them a composition book to write down their feelings in, they are able to heal themselves; more so when they share what they write in their books with the class. The class is better able to understand the reader. Through reading and writing we develop an open mind. We are able to feel and understand what others feel and to express suppressed feelings we sometimes have bottled up inside us.

  95. The students in “Freedom Writers” are filled with such anger at the beginning of the movie because of the place they live and the way they grow up in their racial communities.Yes their anger is reasonable because if they don’t stay alert at all times or show no fear they will not be killed. These kids fight for territories of survival. The students get to trust each other because of the teacher they had. She let them see that no matter what skin or race you are everyone is equal. They played this game that explains it: one question was how many people last friends and family to d violence and majority of them step to the line at the same time. The reading and writing initiate change because of rather throwing a fist or raising a gun the write there thoughts and feelings down. 96. the students are filled with anger because they felt not loved, misunderstand and unwanted by others, because of the way they grew up anger was shown allover their faces, because they had no one to talk to, they didn't trust each other, and the way they grew up the anger was like a protection to them too because showing the anger physically on their faces let others fear them so that was like protection to them and their culture.the students began to learn about each other when they began doing little activities such as playing "the line game" in that game they began knowing each other strengths, weaknesses, favorites and lost of friends and family. they read a book by Anne Frank they enjoyed that book beacuse it relates to their lives of what they when through and how to uplift themselves in a positive way. Reading and writing initiates changes because they write how and what they feel and it gives them a sense of peace because instead of telling each other negative words or anger looks they write and sometimes you get to know yourself more and understand your inner self adn become positive in life .

  97. At the beginning of the movie, the students were very reluctant and came from a violent background. All they knew about was hatred and isolation. Forunately, they had a very determine and outstanding teachers who really got them to be open minded and out spoken about their past and become more aware that the future are thier's.

In class alot of different approach were taken in order to try and bring them together and remove that hatred they had among themselves. Although it took a long time in order for them to be one it did happen in the end.

Freedom Writers is a very interesting movie that shows you that you can make a positive difference in someone's life just by believing in them.

They watch their friends getting shot for bening in the wrong place or for the color of their skin. Especially for growing up in a poor environment these students can’t handle a lot.

  103. These students felt angry at each other because of what they have learnt living in the "street life". They have seen other races cause harm to their closest friends and relatives and they hold each of the entire racial groups responisible. I disagree with their anger because it isnt the other students' fault that any friends or relatives were harmed. In fact some of the murders or attempted murders were not even done by people that some of these young individuals even know. Yet, they hold each other accountable. Eventually they learn to trust each other by finding out each others' stories and understanding that they are more alike than they seem. In fact, most of them are almost the same in the sense of insecurities and beliefs. Reading and writing has helped them to gain a sense of achievement as no other person believed in them before and it was always a "dog eat dog" world. The reading and writing made them feel as though there was something more to expect out of the world and they now put thier hopes in that.

  104. They were filled with so much anger at first because they all wanted respect and that was hard to gain because they couldn't come together and agree with each other on anything! It was a huge discrimination against race!! 106. The students of fresh man English class, thought by Mrs. Erin Gruwell at Woodrow Wilson Classical High School are angry at the beginning of the film, because they go through things in life that students should not be going through. They fight for survival, they kill for respect, they lack trust in teacher class mates and themselves. In class they separate themselves by color, race, and religion to no surprise brought out many fights between the students. Well in my point of view, I would say that the anger is reasonable because by the students being angry all the time, I think it’s a cry for help. The students want to be love and cared for. The students start trust their teacher and classmate because they started communicating with each other and understanding what each young adult is going through hey found that they have some things in common, and by reading and writing in the journals the brought out their angry through their journals than going out into the streets and committing crimes.

    ReplyDelete
  107. In the beginning of the movie “Freedom Writers,” the students are filled with immense anger: anger towards life and towards each other. This anger originated from racial tension and a hatred which they were taught to feel for people of different races and cultures. This environment of intolerance, understandably, created students who were emotionally frustrated as they were unable to express themselves. They felt imprisoned in their classrooms as they did not believe that they would be able to become productive citizens. Low self-esteems, little tolerance, racial tension, and internal and external problems created angry students.
Humans are often considered products of their environments. Hence, the students’ anger is reasonable as they are simply behaving the way they were raised. Without the freedom to express themselves, they become frustrated.
Miss Gruwell helped the students trust one another. She forced them to express themselves in her class. Like Alexandria Denise said, the “Line Game” greatly helped to bring the students together as they realized that they had many things in common. I believe that Miss Gruwell’s optimism and her total faith in her students as well as her dedication helped to raise the self-esteem of her students. By raising their self-esteem, they became more secure in themselves. With this new security, they were able to trust others.
Reading and writing is a key part of this change as they are two major forms of expression. The students read about the experiences of others (like Anne Frank in the Diary of Anne Frank) and they also narrate their own experiences in their journals. They are able to release their frustrations and their thoughts in their journals. The release of their frustrations results in students who are ripe for change.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Students were filled with anger because they each develop a hatred against the different races that were'nt their kind. They were frustrated fighting for territory, respect and their own. The anger ate at them everyday knowing that they must be in the same class and breathe the same air as thier enemies.
The anger was reasonable because those same students had to live the same life everyday. As the movie continues the classmates learn to trust each other by participating in Mrs Gruwell's class, seeing that they have more in common than they thought.
Reading and writing initiate this change by each student wrote a journal, taking Mrs. Gruwell on an insight of an everyday torture of different lives. Students came together sharing the fact of enjoying reading and expressing themselves in different ways their teacher showed. Mrs Gruwell believed in them.

They inherited the hate and disgust that they felt toward each other they had no choice but to continue in this same trend. I do believe that their anger was reasonable because that was the way they were brought up, that is the way that things are int their homes and in their neighbourhood's. They simply learned to trust each other by playing the line game in class. In playing this game they all learned that their classmates from other ethnicities were also going through the same situations and felt the same way. By reading the diary of Anne Frank, they al leared that they must br ston in whatever the do, they also keep their own journals and this helped them to express theselves in writing

  111. Freedom Writers Diaries is an inspiring and life changing movie which portrays the lives of many indiviuals. Whom are enclosed and made to live in their own misery and hate. Facing discrimination, crimes, racism, and misfortunes... They are made to believe that there families, their 'bloods' are to be protected and respected. In order to do that they go through unnecesary measures to gain and keep the respect. This creates divisions in the classroom, asians with their own, as well as the latinos, etc.. However Erin Gruwell makes a difference in these youths life by showing and teaching them that their voices can be heard and their lives can be different, from living in crime and hate. She does this by introducing different types of novels about similar situations that they are in. With these the students relate and are able to overcome their differences and soon they go from the 'unteachables' as they rest of the staff in the school used to refer to them, to a 'family'.

A lot of times we find ourselves in the same situation, with trouble around us or difficulties and we believe that we are the only ones facing these situations but when somebody finally opens our eyes to reality we do not want to accept it, we don't want to change, and this movie teaches us that you need to step up, take chances, make a difference, and you will see how your life changes.

  114. At the beginning of Freedom Writer the students filled with so much anger because no one ever show them how to love people and neither no one never love them. The students were all racism, they think they purpose on earth was to defend they cultural. Furthermore, no one ever had hope in them until Mrs. Guwell the teacher shows them the correct way to live. Not only that for them to survive they needed to fight and kill each others.
I strongly believe their anger were reasonable, no one ever show them respect of make them feel like they have something to live for, so hence the reason the students behave so, in that case they could get a little attention. Those children goes to school every day with big problems and do not know who to trust and talk to. Only people that are in those children situation understands their pains by getting beaten up every day, getting sexual harassed and get extort by other people also to lose a love one, and we all know that is painful.
The students learn to trust each other by the “Line Game” that game shows them that all of them were facing the same problems. Also the different activities the teacher make them part take in make them realize that all of them basically were alike. The students them realize by all of them coming together an unite will help them achieve whatever they want.

The writing and reading of the journals make the teacher more formularize with the struggles her students are facing. That helps the teacher see the problems the students have then she tries to help with them. Also the students feel happier writing in their journal also it occupy their time form getting in stupid gangs that don’t have a future for them. Also the diary of Anne Frank inspire them to live positive because that show them people in the ancient days use to had it harder and they overcome it.

  115. At the start of the movie, we find that the students were very upset and angry. The students were angry because of what they had to go through on a day to day basis. Every day, every time they walk out their front doors they can get shot, for some, for just simply walking somewhere they shouldn’t and for others for just being outside. I believe the students anger were more than reasonable, due to the fact that this was the way they grew up. By this I mean that they were taught that whichever race they’re from, whether it was the Cambodians, Latinos, Whites or Blacks, that they were in the area first and that all other race should respect them. Every day to them it is literally a survival challenge, because of the segregation between the gangs.
In the film, I would have to say that the turning point for the classmates to begin starting to trust each other was when Ms Gruell introduced them to the Line Game. By playing this game this made them realized that the actions of violence are hurting not only themselves but also others as well. But the trust really began when Ms Gruel had them write the diaries of their everyday lives, and they find themselves in a very similar situation of lifestyle and almost all of them has been touched some way or the other by gang violence. What the writing did is that it made everyone aware of what each of them are going through and also it served as a means of them venting, and being able to put their frustration and trials on paper.

  117. Primilee says:In the beginning of the movie Freedom Writers, the students were filled with so much anger simply because most of them had no one to really look after their basic needs. They never even had respect for their classmates much less the teacher so they did all kind of bad things and the teacher realize very quickly that the students are lack of something; something was missing in those students lives.
By having the students read the Diary of Anne Frank’s the student starting realizing that they must never give up on their dreams and their goals. This simple book made a big change in those student lives it became a class room once again. Reading the book also brought took away the anger and the hatred they had for each other. They also learn how to express themselves in front of the class room this is a very touching movie and it send a very strong message.

  118. The children were filled with so much anger because they didn’t really have anyone who showed that they really cared for them. Watching your friends and family getting killed every day in This “War of the Races is hard to cope with and not having anyone to share their feelings with that made them have all that pent up anger in them. I think their anger was reasonable for that reason. They learned to trust each other after Ms.. G., their new teacher showed them that she really loved and cared for them and made herself available to assist them if they needed someone to talk to about their problems. Having them writing journals about their feelings and reading books about people that went through similar experiences like them and they overcame it, they realized that they can do the same. Reading and writing their problems and sharing them with each other helped them to realize that other classmates are going through the same thing. This helped them to open up and trust each other.
