Health and Family Life-HESCI 2102 POST II (SUMMER SESSION)

Domestic violence refers to the use of force to control and maintain power over another person in the home environment. it can involve emotional abuse, verbal abuse, threats of physical harm, and actual physical violence ranging from slapping and shoving to beating, rape, and homicide.

Compare domestic violence against men and against women. What are the differences? What are the similarities? what causes domestic violence?

48 comments:

  1. most case of violence against men is far way less than those against women.first of all the incidence of domestic violence reported, men appear to be so low that it is hard to get reliable estimates. the idea that men could be victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable that many men will not even attempt to report situation. for women the rate are higher and many cases even result in death. the difference are that men usually feel like nobody believes them, what hurt a woman feeling will not hurt a man feeling, man don't want to be call coward, and men are affected by emotional abuse than physical. the similarities between both they have shame, low self esteem, for both it include slapping, hitting, pushing, stricking, etc. the bruise can be seen physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally. all these violence are cause because of the need of control and dominant over the other partner, alcohol and other chemical substances, children who witness or are victims, boys who learn that women are not to be value or respected, those who see violence directed against women.

  2. Very little in known about the actual number of men who are in a domestic relationship in which they are abused or treated violently by women. In 100 domestic violence situations approximately 40 cases involve violence by women against men.
Some reasons why we don't know more about domestic abuse and violence against men. Firstly, it has taken years of advocacy and support to encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been done to encourage men to report abuse. The thought of men being victims of domestic abuse and violence is a joke that many men don't go to report the situation. In addition there has also been very little investment in resources to address and understand the issues of domestic violence against men. Furthermore, the police rsponse to violence against women is far higher than that if violence against men.
The similarity I would say is that both sexes are at risk of being affected by domestic violence. be it physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse etc. Recently I have seen on the television a commercial where the men have stepped up to stop violence against women. There are many causes of domestic violence namely: the enviornment meaning if you are growing up seeing this type of behavior. Poor self Esteem: growing up in a violent home lowers your self esteem. and drug and alcohol use: these lead to out of control behavior, leading the children to anger.

  3. When it comes to domstic violence against men not much is known as very little is known about the actual number of men who are in a domestic relationship which they are abused or treated violently by women. However when it comes to women in domestic violence a lot can be said.
There are no absolute rules for understanding the emotional differences between men and women. There are principles and dynamics that allow interpretation of indivdual situations. Domestic abuse and violence against men and women have some similarities and difference. For men or women, domestic violence includes pushing, slapping, hitting, throwing oblects, forcing or slamming a door or striking the other person with an object, or using a weapon. Domestic abuse can also be mental or emotional. However, what will hurt a man mentally and emotinally, can in some cases be very diferent from what hurts a woman. For some men, being called a coward, impotent or a failure can have a very different psychological impact thanit would on a woman. Unkind and cruel words hurt, but they can hurt i different ways and linger in different ways. In most cases, men are more deeply affected by emotional abuse than physcal abuse.
When it comes to cause of domesti violence they are many that we can choose from, but to metion a few cause of domestic violence stemming from drug abuse, infidelity, frustraion etc. These are the one that are more popular in our Belizean society that we are faced with each and everyday which are mostly been reported by women.

  4. To compare domestic violence between man and women is as clear as night and day. In most cases when a female is being the perpetrator the abuse is surrounding harassment, emotional and intimidation. (Pushing and lapping) domestic violence when a male being the perpetrator, the violence’s are ranging from slapping, rape, shoving, homicide ect. In my view, the difference is clear with domestic violence in Belize and other parts of the world. To some extent culture is link to domestic violence because of the way our males were brought up, believing that males have dominion over all things (females) especially in the home, for years and years this concept was accepted. Due to the movement of women and the emerging of human right recognizing that female should be respected and protected by the law, females are now fighting for equity and equality. Resulting from the empowerment of females in the house hold some males become insecure and threaten causing all the above domestic violence if no immediate attention is given to the situation. Although the difference in domestic violence is clear, one may believe that a female can never commit domestic violence to a male that belief is wrong, males and females do suffer from domestic violence in all recorded way of domestic violence. Especially in areas of emotional, physical and financial abuse.

  5. I would have to agree with what Ms. Pamela said as both male and female are at risk of being affcetd by domestic violence. Some of the reason are like what she mension such as the enviroment you grow up in, I think that plays a major role in a person life. WY I say that is becuase A child will act or have the same behavior when they ae grown based on the environment and what they saw occuring inthier own homes. So if they growed up in an abusive home where domestic violence was constant then they too will carry out these same behavior that was portrayed in thier homes.

  6. @ Shekeria young, am in agreement with you. please bear in mind that domestic abuse is not only in the physical sense, and not because the records does not show a high numbers of males reporting domestic abuse, we should never believe that the abuse does not exist or it’s not high, that Statistics is only telling us that we need our males to recognize their inner emotions and ask for assistance whenever they are face with a abusive situation.

  7. I agree with Sane comment to pamela post, both of them is referring to the nature nurture theory, many researcher believe that a person environment have a lot to play on their character and behavior. In my view, a person can become a abuser both by nature and by nurture because alcohol drinking is proven to be heredity and is one of the leading cause of domestic violence. Great comments guys

  8. I for sure agree with what shane is saying on violence agains both women and men. the stake is high for both. only that within our country women is seen as victims, and men as the preditor. An the law is design on a high scale for women. They are men out there that is being abuse but they may take price and think it would be shameful to say a woman abuse them but it is not a crime, it is the same as if a man had beaten a women.

  9. I think domestic abuse and violence between men and women are different. The reasons, purposes and motivations are often differnt between sexes. Even though Belize has set in place couselin and violence against women , there is a little done for domestic abuse or violence against men. In todays society when men report doemestic abuse or violences most people are astonished as a result men usually end up feeling like nobody believe them. The idea of men being victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable that many men will not even attempt to report the situation. There is only one similarity between violence against men and women which is that both sexes are at risk to be a victim. Domestic abuse and violence can be caused by the use of drugs or alcohol, poor self esteem and even fustration.

  10. Domestic violence and abuse does not discriminate. It happens to both males and females. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more commonly victimized, men are also abused—especially verbally and emotionally. The bottom line is that abusive behavior is never acceptable, whether it’s coming from a man, a woman, a teenager, or an older adult. Everyone deserves to feel valued, respected, and safe.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The difference is that more women are victims and survivors of domestic violence as oppose to men. The similarity is that both males and females are batterers. However more female report domestic violence than men, the reason why men do not report domestic violence is that they feel they will be discriminated against.
The cause of domestic violence is power and control, over an individual. Male or female may feel this need to control their partner because of low self esteem, jealousy or when they feel inferior to their partner in education. Some men traditionally think they have a right to control women and some women think they have a right to mistreat their partner
Domestic abuse can also be mental or emotional. However, what will hurt a man mentally and emotionally, can in some cases be very different from what hurts a woman. For some men, being called a coward, impotent or a failure can have a very different psychological impact than it would on a woman. Unkind and cruel words hurt, but they can hurt in different ways and linger in different ways.

  12. I agree with shane when he stated that domestic abuse and violence against men is not recognize but for women there is lot to be said about this topic. I also agree with him when he said that in most cases men are more deeply affected by emotinal abuse than physical because they hold in their feelings and fear that they will be ridiculed.

  13. Men in our society are considered the super hero who can’t be hurt emotional. Surprisingly men are abused emotionally more than physically. But because when they go to report a domestic abuse it hard for the people to whom the report is made to believe it. Hence this causes them to be shame and they don’t report the domestic abuse, and also men are not encouraged by the community to report the abuse. Men who are called coward, impotent etc are more affected than those physically abused. Women are abuse three times more than men. Contrary to men, women are abuse physically because this makes the male feel that they have the total control in the relationship. Women remain in abusive environment because they are afraid of living in poverty. In our cultures women are made to be dependent on men. Men remain in abusive environment because they want to protect their children, they are afraid of new relationship etc. Men sometimes abuse women for no reason. Women who abuse men are either alcoholic, drug dependent etc. Men who lived in abusive home normally become and abuser. Domestic violence is normally caused by poor self esteem. We need to encourage both male and females to report domestic violence. Domestic violence has caused many dead in females and males. Idith

  14. I disagree to some point with shekeria when it comes to the point that men don’t attempt to report the abuser. As I research men do try to report the abuser but because when they try to report the abuse the people don’t believe them they don’t report the abuse they live in. Surely men are mostly emotionally abused more than physically. I most say we need to encourage our males to report domestic abuse and continue to encourage the females to report the abuse and show them that they can survive in the society and be able to care for their children.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Women tend to have a high amount of tolerance, for males to do what they want to do. They get affected physically and emotionally, while the men are more affected deeply by emotional abuse. If men would report their cases of domestic violence society tend to call them powerless. When a woman would report her case every one would do their best to help the woman to get out of it, because mothers are the back bone of a house hold. Sometimes we wonder why the suicide rate is higher in the male population; I guess it is because they are being battered at time in life by a woman they chose to end their life because they can not take it no more. While some other just walk away from trouble.
Similarities of domestic abuse include hitting each other with objects, pushing the head in water, chopping, slapping and sometimes utter of harsh word to each other. There was this one time when my neighbor dragged her husband down the stairs, a couple week after the man took his wife and dash her from the verandah of the house and she broke her feet. Some causes of domestic abuse are alcohol abuse, jealousy and impractical anticipation. Once there is drug abuse in a relationship there will be domestic abuse. Well here in Belize I think jealousy is the most reason why women and men get abusive. Setting impractical anticipation I would say is the second cause of domestic abuse.

  16. When comparing domestic violence against men and against women we must compare that the reports of violence against men are rarely reported and are often time less serious that those of women. The percentage of known domestic violence against men is far less than the percentage of reports by women. Until more effort is put in to stopping domestic abuse of men and society accept that this type of abuse those happen the report and facts about domestic violence against men will always be less and unsure. The similarities when it comes to domestic violence against men and against women are that both sex genders are abuse and goes through violence in their relationship. Both sexes are affected by this particular type violence each day and both gender most deal with the stereotyping of society. They are different reasons for domestic violence whether it is jealousy, insecurity, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, financial problems, life stress or unfaithfulness the violence is there in the homes and must be controlled. Knowledge of these different reasons for domestic violence can be helpful to prevent this type of violence from occurring.

  17. I agree with Shane when he states that little is known about the domestic violence that men goes through and more information can be found or said about women. The report of men should be looked upon the same way women reports or looked upon and handle.

  18. Idith Yes in some cultures women are made to be dependent on men, but the tables are turning. Some day, I think that what your culture believes in will change too. I agree that sometimes men abuse women for no reason and its visa versa women abuse men for no reason too. I don’t agree with this part “women who abuse men are either alcoholic, drug dependent etc” some time the women just get tired of men doing as they are please so they has to do what they got to do. They are some women that are abusers but they do not do any kind of drugs. As the group said on Tuesday its all about the three skills of social health (communication, compromising and cooperation).

  19. Domestic violence against men does exist but not reported while on the other hand domestic violence against women is quite common. Domestic violence is usually by men against women but women are breaking the silence and speaking out against it. Due to men’s role in society they are a shame to come forward and file reports against domestic violence. Domestic violence has many forms including physical abuse which is hitting, kicking, shoving, throwing objects, sexual abuse and emotional abuse.
They are some similarities and difference between men and women who are experiencing domestic violence for example the differences are men are being silent about it while the women are talking. Men are leaving the home while the women stay in the relationship because of what people will think. Some similarities are they both have low self esteem. Another would be they are both emotionally stress and they both make excuses for what is happening to them.
They are many causes for domestic violence in the home one being substance abuse, mental illness, neglect, economic deprivation, intimidation, stalking, lack of respect, also lack of communication. I can go on and on for the causes but these should not give a person the right to be abusive to their family or love ones. Let us work on improving our society. Stop Domestic Violence!

  20. I can agree with Shane when he mentioned that when it comes to domestic violence against men not much is known about men who are in relationship where they are being abuse by women. I also agree with the fact that what hurts a man emotionally or mentally can be different from what hurts a woman. Oh and the part about men are more deeply affected by emotional abuse than physical abuse I agree with that. So in other words the key to a healthy relationship is to remember that communication is very important. Also remember your spiritual wellness is important. God placed things in this world for us to use and people to love. Don’t love things and use people.

  21. Domestic violence allows either a male or a female to take away power or control from the other through violent confrontation whether it is physical, emotional, verbal, sexual or otherwise. Rather than compromise or mutual agreement force is used to suppress growth development in a relationship. Domestic abuse can occur because of simple things, such as taking too long at the shop, not answering your spouse when they ask you a question or complex issues such as suspicion of cheating. It is caused through the way some people were raised in their homes, for some people especially men they believe that they can hit since they think they own you, drinking excessive alcohol, not able to express yourself in meaningful ways, but mainly because of insecurity, jealousy and possessiveness.
In our society, we are told that men should be aggressive, dominant and assertive when issues arise that requires showing emotion and physical strength. A male is always encouraged to show his strength this is reinforced through continuous reminders that no female should beat them physically. Hence when a man is being physically abuse, it is rare that he would mention the incident to his family or make a report at the police station. Men become discourage from making reports because there is no specific person at the station for them to talk with and many times they are ridicule or not taken seriously. Men likes to hide their emotions, thus it is overwhelming for them to admit when they are being abused. On the other hand although some women in abusive relationship go unnoticed and unreported, many women cases of abuse are constantly being reported and prosecuted. There are many networks, of organization funded by government and NGO’s for abused women to access unlike men who have none. We are living in a changing world, each of our strength and ability to adapt or persuade is different, therefore there should be a support network for all genders. Mothers must encourage their children to speak up and speak out. Encourage their sons to not be ashamed to show and share their emotions when they are hurting.
I do agree with Pamela, that growing up in violent home can lower your self esteem, which leads to other problems, later in life continuing the same cycle of abuse on others. Inflicting harm where there can be compromise. Hence it is important to teach our children different ways to cope and correspond.

  22. I agree with what Shane said. As was mentioned in my answer those were just a few causes of domestic violence. However another main cause is infidelity among both sexes. When a man finds out his spouse has cheated on him, he may end up turning to alcohol consumption or drug use. This can lead to outrageous behavior and violence and the same goes for the woman. Sometimes victims end up getting hurt badly or even dead

    ReplyDelete
  23. Whenever it comes to domestic violence, you hardly hear about men being abuse by their partner. After I read a little on domestic violence I understand that only 40% of men are being abused by woman. Men always tend to play the boss in a relationship so they can have the most power over everything and everyone. A woman always faces the most trouble whenever it comes to domestic violence that sometimes may lead to death. The difference between a man and a woman when dealing with domestic violence are that the man would never report to police or someone because he doesn’t want to be call a coward so he will just keep his emotions to his self, as I mention they would always want to be the person in control, men also don’t like to own up to certain situation so they well solve it by force while woman will always try to find a way to come out of this situation by reporting it or talk to someone. Women are always willing to find a solution to end the problem but men never agree. In similarities between both man and woman are that they faces shame because they were kicked, slapped, punched etc. that causes them to have bruises so they began to feel it physically, emotionally and mentally. Domestic violence are caused in some many ways due to drugs, misunderstanding of a conversation, needs not meet so frustration comes in, wanting to have control over the other, etc. sometimes what children sees in their home will be the same thing they would take into society because they think that it is right for them.

  24. I strongly agree with Shane because couple those faces a lot in domestic violence. The mentioned about infidelity which is sex that are occurring outside of a relationship which stated that the person is cheating and that causes a lot of conflicts between them, in this case it sometimes hurt the man the most when he finds out. The man will becomes angry and starts to hit on his partner sometimes it happens to get way out of control that it may leads to death or breaking up then to develop knew habits like drinking and smoking. When I females finds out that her other half is cheating they would try their best to get the truth but sometime it would turned out to be domestic because the man cannot stand a moment of truth.

  25. Domestic Violence against men and against women in my opinion is not too different.
What I see is that very few men report that they are victims of domestic violence, while statistics have shown that through the years that more women have reported that they are victims of domestic violence. In addition, in Belize we live in a macho society where the man rules and he is king of his domain. So in reality, if a man would enter the police station and reported that is wife had just beaten him up. He would be laugh at or scorn. Fellow men would think that he is a “sissy boy” or a “soft man”. More advocacy and publicity have been raised particularly in connection to women and domestic violence than men. The idea that a woman can abuse a man physically is still unthinkable in our minds. However, it does occur and it is definitely wrong when both sexes behave in this manner.
There is no differences in my opinion, violence is wrong and should not be condone. Although, different dynamics and reasons might exist for a woman to abuse her partner, but there have not been any studies done in this area that I know of. Similarities involved are, whether the victim is a man or woman is that he or she feels or stay because of the following:
     Isolated and alone
     Fearful and intimidated
     Self-esteem will be low
     Stay because of children
 Stay because he or she might be economically dependent on the partner
 Stay because he or she has no place to go.
I am sure that there are many more reasons that I have not thought of, so by no means is the above list exhaustive.
Domestic violence occurs because of several reasons, the perpetrator may be using alcohol and other hard core drugs, have seen domestic violence in the family where he or she was brought up and therefore thinks that this is normal behavior, jealousy and anger, insecurity, and perhaps mental illness. However, it is important to note that there is no good reason for domestic violence to occur. It is imperative that no one should be beaten. No one has the right to abuse you physically, mentally, verbally, or sexually.

  26. domestic violence to me does not differ much between men and women because men and women are capable of doing of doing the same type of damage to each other. to me if there is a difference is the strenght. but that was in the old times but now the power is the same. females one are reprted more because males are ashame to talk about them being get hurting by females. domestic violence is the the fighting hurting quarreling between a male and a female in a relationship.

  28. I certainly agree with Cherrie that domestic violence is a power and control tactic. However, in the early nineties I can remember attending domestic violence workshops where it was reported by police officers and social workers that women were making statements like “If he no beat mi he no love mi”. I do hope that this way of thinking has improved in the 21st century. Also, I do agree that men have limited support services here in Belize, however the Women’s Department, Family Court, the Domestic Violence
Unit (Police) is places where men can also received support services in the area of domestic violence. It is a pity that men do not utilized these services enough.

  29. Children can have varying degrees of psychological problems when
they experience domestic violence in the home. Children who have experienced
domestic violence is more likely to suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety disorders,
depression and suicidal thoughts. At times, they tend to accept this behavior
as normal and then transfer this action into their adult relationships with their partners

  31. Both men and women are affected by domestic violence of some sort when the issue is discussed. In our society women are more commonly victimized, while men are also abused but at a lesser extent because of no proof. In our society the norm is that men are to be seen as the “big shots” so if they ever to report such findings, citizens would find it strange or they will state that he must be a “punk” in order for such matter to come about. If you ever reflect, most of the time when the news comes across it’s a female making a report, seldom or never would you hear of men reporting abusive cases against a female. Nevertheless both men and women face intimidation, humiliation from the other person or physical injury when domestic violence is present.
Domestic violence surface because of many reasons in our everyday life like jealousy, stress, working two jobs, depress, anger, unemployment etc. Many a times we see people going about their daily life like any other person, but it’s only until the neighbor or friend say “you mi know that so and so beat his woman or she dash acid in his face because of”. However such abusive behavior should never be acceptable, whether it’s coming from a man or woman. Everyone deserves to feel valued, respected, and safe.

  32. I agree with Kissy, Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone but it should not happen to anybody. Both men and women need to speak out and break this cycle. It may not be easy to identify domestic violence at first. While some relationships are clearly abusive from the outset, abuse often starts subtly and gets worse over time. The only way to break the cycle of domestic violence is to take action- the sooner the better.

  33. Domestic violence as defined can be said to affect most households in Belize. Not because you don't hear about it or see it where you live or not reported in certain middle class circle does not mean it is not occurring and it does not discriminate only to affect females. There are male persons who also are abuse one way or another, but because of society's cultural acceptance that men are the head of the household and women to submit to their every need, most male persons are in self denial of being a victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence against women is different to a degree than men when looking at the outward signs that women are affected in comparison to the same signs for men. Women may be beaten and show signs of abuse by bruises and swollen eyes, whereas a male person may by verbally or mentally abuse, for example consistently told by his spouse that he is worthless, always broke, and cannot provide fully for the household. The similarities are that both men and women are adversely affected by this kind of abuse and because of their children live with it for many years, either accepting the abuse for the sake of the children or adversely affecting their families in divorce or sometimes to the extent of serious bodily harm on the male or female, extending to death. Looking at Domestic violence, it can be said fairly that most men and women endure this abuse because they don't want to be labeled by society that they have a failed relationship. However, living with this abuse ultimately affect those involve and most seriously affects the positive growth of their children, who only seeing this kind of behavior, may tend to exhibit the same negative attributes, because they know nothing different. The children are ignorant to love and care, so hopelessness and negative traits are reflective of their life. So this trend of abuse can only be stopped when a man and a woman know what is Domestic Violence and seek help with a counselor or an elder, church sister and or brother to bring that spiritual growth necessary to diminish this serious problem which is affecting the growth of Belize, extending to violence in our society among youths, who don't understand or believe they have positive qualities within them.

  34. Tiff's view on this issue covers this serious social problem in a nutshell. There are many reasons why we have so many single mothers taking care of their children. Most of these instances are as a result of Domestic violence. As Tiff said because of intimidation and other factors most males don't report abuse, while women who have to take care of their children, a female innate trait; are mainly left to support their children. This in itself is abuse. I think that lawmakers need to access the advantage taken on women in these cases, who suffer great mental anxiety, because they are left alone to support their children. Some Law needs to be put into effect to give women some serious financial support, because ultimately the children are the ones who bare this lasting scar and left with this stigma that they were not good enough to be loved by both their mother and father. It is a tough subject and teachers are the ones who are told these disturbing acts of violence, which remains in the minds of young children.

  35. Domestic abuse is a very heart breaking issue. We know that domestic abuse can happen to anyone male or female. It is sad that in many cases the victim of domestic abuse feel as if they have no were to turn. This lead to the victims remaining silent simple because they are a shame or somehow feel as if they are responsible for what is happening to them. What I finding amazing is that it is done in the name of love. I have heard many female victims of domestic abuse claiming that “he beat me because he loves me.”
While it true that domestic violence occurs more in female than it male this does not change the fact that abuse is abuse regardless of who it happen to. I enjoyed reading you post Omar. You are right time has change as a result we are seeing more women fighting for their rights. Hooray

  36. Generally men are less abused than women in our society. Over the past decades I have witnessed only a few men being abused. Men are stronger in body and strength, their not as weak as women. Nevertheless, there are women who are strong, independent and can stand up to the man who tries to slip up wanting to make them a punching bag or a toy. Many other women are too weak and choose not to stand strong for their rights. Rather they remain silent and take the hits. I strongly believe they need motivation to defend themselves to say STOP! and NO! making a difference and changing this nonsense. There are many things, issues and problems that occur in a home that causes violence. Personally from my experience, drugs and alcohol were two of them. Smoking the ‘white lady’ crack cocaine and drinking for a period of time leads many men to hallucinations and believes that there’s always something wrong and that everyone, or their spouse is lying to them. They then react to that and just start taking their frustration out of you. After watching my mother going through those twenty years of domestic violence has been nothing nice. I can surely say that it had an impact on me as a child/teenager. It caused me to put up a wall towards men and have caused me get to reach a serious level of aggressiveness towards them. Today I have learnt to manage my aggressiveness to maintain the trust and faithfulness to my present family. This is for Kimberly pineda

  40. There are several differences and similarities between domestic abuse against men and women. First of all, the incidence of domestic violence against men is fairly low due to the fact that it is sometimes never reported. On the other hand, it has taken years to promote and provide support to encourage women report domestic violence. Nothing has been done to encourage men to report domestic violence. The idea of men reporting it is unthinkable that many men will not even report the situation. When they do report it, the people in charge are so surprised that men end up believing that nobody believes them. When they see a man with a black eye people would assume it was done by another man or he suffered it during a contact sport or something of the sort. Nevertheless, both domestic violence of women and men involve some sort of physical or emotional abuse. It occurs to people of all cultures and races.
One of the most common factors in domestic violence against women is alcohol and/or substance abuse. Others cases might be the cause of personal problems in the family or psychological disorders.

  41. In response to Idith's comment, I would say that in Belize and all over the world statistics would say that women are the most abused human beings. One can never be for sure of that, since men are sos embarass to report it that they never do. On ther other hand, women do report it more than men do. What if men would begin to report it?

  42. Domestic violence is more common in females than in males. Domestic violence is mostly used by men because they have more force and know how to abuse women. Domestic violence is a serious problem all around the world, whereas most cases of women being abused is reported. The difference between men and women when it comes to domestic violence is that more cases are being reported for women than for men. Men feel ashame whenever they have to report it and they react differently to situations and abuses. The similarities is that both are being affected mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. The effects of violence are the same the only difference is the way we react and act to it. In my view i would say that domestic violenc is caused by jelousness. This is the number one reason for trying to use domestic violence. Whenever one partner feels the need to control the other person because of low self -esteem it also leads to domestic violence. the other reason for domestic violence is beacuse it`s a traditional belief for men that they need to control a woman.

  43. I totally agree with what July said, cases for men are not being reported and little mind is paid when it comes to domestic violence for men. AS she stated alcohol is the main facor that cause this abuse to occur, i think that alcohol leads to all kind of abuse.

  44. Domestic violence against men and women are definitely different. There is a power differential between men and women and it’s a physical one. Statistics show that women are on the receiving end of domestic violence more than men. No one is denying that there aren’t men out there that are being abused. Men that are abused are ashamed to report it and be ridiculed especially by police officers that are the first contact with the system. It’s more frequent that women are beaten and battered. Often times these episodes mutate into murder and horrendous beatings that leave women blind. The types of abuse that men mostly suffer are verbal and emotional abuse as women are able to tell men the most hurtful things. Because women’s tongues are so sharp I guess that is why men get frustrated and hit because that is the only way they can respond to that hurt to show power and domination. The similarities are that a human being is hurt and deprived of self determination as an individual. Causes of domestic violence are many and social class does not play a role because it is as common among the rich as the poor. Some men were raised seeing domestic violence and believe that their women are their property so they can beat. They see it as a means to control their women. Domestic violence becomes widespread because of some women unwillingness to even admit that it is happening to them. So they suffer in silence while their husbands use the beatings as an more and more to solve every issue. tylon tillett

  45. i agree with mares when she said that the government should put in more laws to protect women. but laws only work if people access them and a lot of times these same battered women report the abuse and then drop the case against the violent abusers at the court date. That waste the systems time. these same women take back these men that continues to abuse them even more now because they feel that they cannot go again and waste people's time

  46. In my views there isn’t any difference between abuse is abuse wither is against a female or male emotional abuse, verbal abuse, threats of physical harm physical violence ranging from slapping and shoving to beating, rape, and homicide, its all the same!
Growing up I’ve always been taught what domestic abuse is and who are most likely to be victims of domestic abuse. Minor things such as a female not cooking, cleaning the house, not washing, talking to a male and so forth can cause domestic abuse sometimes its men trying to show that they have power over their partners so they impose fear as a way of ensuring that females do what they should do in their views.
I understand that at the end of every day females and males want to come home to a clean house or what so ever the situation is but things such as not cleaning the house or cooking, talking to the opposite sex excreta should not cause an individual to get upset to the point where harm is inflicted… What ever the situation is there shouldn’t be any justification as to what cause domestic abuse against females or males.

  47. In response to i agree with Ashley men are indeed afraid to talk about their experience when it comes to domestic violence. And when it comes to solving a problem communication is key, but men tend to use force to get there point across which is unfair. She is rite that drugs, misunderstanding, unmet needs, most importantly the will to feel powerful over the other. Ashley mentioned that what children see at home they tend to believe that beating your partner is rite and take it into society and to add my own opinion they them selves turn out to be abusers.

  48. in my opinion any abuse is an abuse. the only difference is that most women would make their report while most men don't.
Most of the time Domestic violence is cause when the man is jealous.
